If you’ve had a child at the Memorial School then you’re probably familiar with the tile project. For 17 years, the graduating class, (was 5th graders, now 4th graders), each make a tile that is then installed on the walls of the Memorial School. This year’s theme is in the style of artist, Piet Mondrian. In bold colored markers, each child designs a square (to be the tile design).
The artwork is then traced onto a tile. Carefully the children glaze with a brush one color at a time, 3 coats of each. Masking is used as not to bleed onto the other colors. This is very time consuming.
Once the children are done glazing, the tiles are touched up by the helpers, Mrs King here as well as the art teacher, Mrs Moyer spend many hours filling in anything missing,
so the tiles will look like the original art work.
There is constant colaboration between the helpers and the artist to insure it is like the original. Unlike marker, the brush requires more control and is not as easy for the children to use in detail.
The muted colors will turn bright and glossy after being baked in the kiln.
Completed tiles will go in the kiln for 24 hours, both for baking and cooling. Once completed, the tiles will be installed in time for the Arts Festival on June 2nd so the children will be able to see their tile before the end of the school year.
