Making his own Studio

Today Bruce started painting mosques, from a bright colored photo, its what interested him to paint that day.  His wife, Betty spends everyday with her husband visiting him at Medway Country Manor, his home for now.

"I can't walk and I can't stand, so I paint" Bruce said to me.

After lunch if Bruce feels like it that day, he will paint. Over the summer he painted mostly outdoors. He will set up a studio inside now, as long as he's warm. When its too cold, its difficult for him to move his hands.  On the back of his wheel chair is a bag where he has all his supplies if needed. When he's ready he asks Betty to get a specific color, she puts a little dab of a color or 2 on a piece of paper, and any mixing of colors is done directly on the canvas, it works for him. He doesn't draw it out first, that's not the way he creates.

He plans it out in his head, thinks about the composition. He feels the dark colors should be towards the top and lighter colors at the bottom. If he's not happy with part of the work, he waits for it to dry and paints over it.

He has an impressionism style of painting. Some techniques include short, thick paint brush strokes, emphasis is on color and light rather than details.

Betty shared some of his art work. They have many more at their home, but a few here at the Manor.

Bruce's color studies.

Bruce has dementia but as I sat with him he recalled many stories of when he painted in oils in the 70's, when his kids were young. He was an accountant but had many creative outlets. He loved to refinish furniture. He would buy a piece at an antique store and bring it back to it's natural beauty and just add a polyurethane finish. Bruce said he would love to do that again but isn't able to use all his tools and wouldn't be able to handle large pieces of furniture.
I'm on the hunt now for a small wooden antique of some sort, for Bruce to refinish. He is fine with just using sand paper. He said they (at the Medway Country Manor) would have a place for him to work.

A Local Artist's Studio & Gallery

Canman, a business owner and tattoo artist, has a high attention to detail as he works on coloring his client's custom tattoo. Much thought and time goes into the design of a tattoo before any work is done to assure the client gets the design they want, with approved artwork on paper. Canman, and the other artists, at Visions Tattoo, Piercing and Art Gallery, create unique works of art, that is specific to the client and no one else has.

Canman has his original artwork close by to use as a reference.

Canman & his wife, Angela Cannistraro, a professional body piercer, opened Visions in 2004 on Main Street, here in the same town where Canman grew up. There are 4 other creative artists at Visions: Ariel Robinson, Craig Prentiss, Teejay and Nicholas Adams, so Canman has time to spend in growing their business as well as creating works of art on canvas. Below is their new 3rd floor, with a studio, office and plenty of space to have get-togethers with other artists.
In Canman's artwork he uses acrylics and oil and has also been experimenting with mixed media.

Canman, while out on a hike, drew his attention to some loud birds and stopped to see what was all the noise. He noticed in the distance smoke stacks of buildings representing pollution/industry which was the influence for this bird series, 1 of 4.

On the first floor you will find cases of jewelry for piercing, tattoo art inspiration, and Canman's gallery of various paintings, all having a story to tell and much emotion.

Surrealism influenced works of art.
Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s. Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes with photographic precision, created strange creatures from everyday objects and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself.

Inspiration through Beautiful Photographs & Words, from a Breast Cancer Survivor

Gardening was Barbara Stinson's first love, as a young child watching her aunts work on their garden  and she saw how beautiful the flowers were. She looked forward to having her own garden someday. She later became an avid gardener, as well as a musician and educator.
Barbara appreciated the beauty around her. When she began traveling, she purchased a camera to remember her time there and soon developed an interest in photography.

This love of gardening and photography helped her later get through some tough times. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1999 and again in 2011. She would continue her gardening and taking photos of the flowers, up close and personal, it because very therapeutic for her.
With her 2nd diagnoses, she focused her attention on pink flowers, tuning in on their different characteristics and qualities.

Barbara also began writing, creating analogies with the flowers and humans, from the strength of the Cosmo to the confidence of a Foxglove.

In her recent book, "Pink Petals, A Focus on Healing", Barbara has put together a collection of photographs from her garden with words of support. She hopes to help others going through Breast Cancer as a means of comfort and inspiration.

Barbara has a beautiful home and surrounds herself with art from her travels and of course flowers.  The last of fall flowers, Dahlia's, from her garden keep in a vase.

Thank you Barbara for sharing your book.

This large tapestry Barbara picked up in Russia is on her entry wall.

A few flowers in her garden are still showing their colors.

Below are some garden photographs Barbara had taken when in full bloom.

Artist, Judith Moffatt's Fun & Colorful Studio

Thank you to Judith for sharing her studio. She lives on a quiet street overlooking the Charles River with lots of greenery and wildlife in her view. It is a very peaceful place to work and enjoys her studio/home with her husband, Tabby cat & Airedale terrier.

Judith is the illustrator of over 50 books for young children. By using cut paper artwork, she creates a 3 dimensional look using bold colors. You will also see her Tabby cat featured in many of her books, below in the 12 Days of Christmas.

Some of her work is from inspiration right out her window!

These little guys were featured in one of her books, here with a framed original.

Judith shared with me her latest project, after two successful Mandala coloring books, she creates "Garden To Go" a traveling coloring book. You can purchase these on her Etsy site (link below) and locally at TC Scoops. These are really for all ages, I've used them (yes I love coloring), as well as my 10 & 12 yr old.

Judith is here working on a winter Mandala design.

Judith & her husband (an digital artist) work together on some projects including this animal series for Ranger Rick Jr Magazine.
